Hey guys,

Been awhile I know. Let's see...I ended the deer season strong taking a few does with my Muzzleloader. How peaceful is that doe. I shot her at 20 yards out back of my house and she ran straight at my stand and bedded down 5 yards from the base of my tree. she just put her head down and died. Really nice and peaceful. Which they were all like that and I didn't have to beat deer to death anymore, or finish them off with a filet knife, or swim across rivers to get them. What a season I had this year. Overall my best season ever as far as numbers go. Lots of meat for the freezer and a nice ten pointer. Nice that NY allows us to harvest so many deer. Over Christmas break I hit Sandy Creek twice and caught a few browns (see pictures). I also went rabbit hunting out back with my dad. We killed two in an hour or so. Check out the picture of them frying in teh pan. Looks almost professional. They were delicious. I also Started predator calling with some success. I only hunted out back for a few minutes a couple of days with a mouth call, but I did manage to call in 6 foxes and one coyote. Missed them all due to improper equipment (shotgun #2 shot). But now I have a rifle and an electric call. Should be awesome. I can't wait for this weekend. I'll keep you guys updated. Hopefully this cold weather will freeze up the lake too. I need to catch some meat fish for the freezer. Love to see some posts from you guys my friends.

So, I was listening to a radio preacher the other day, and he noticed that his congregation was not really listening to his sermon. So he told the following joke:
A lawyer, a doctor, and a preacher all went deer hunting together. After sitting around in the woods for a few hours, a nice buck ran past them. They all fired their guns simultaneously, all three hit the deer, and the deer dropped right there on the spot.
At this point, the three men started to argue over who had put the killing shot on the deer. The lawyer said, "Well, everyone knows I'm the best shot, so it's obvious that I put the killing shot on it." Before anyone could make another argument, the doctor said the he could easily get to the bottom of it by simply examining the deer.
He walked over to the deer, looked at it for a few moments and said, "The preacher definitely put the killing shot on that deer."
The others were impressed with his quick assessment and asked him how he knew.
He replied, "The bullet went in one ear and out the other."

I have no new pictures since my computer stopped uploading them for some unknown reason. This is also my reason for no posts. Pretty lame, I know Joe. We got several deer the last couple of days in the northern zone on our property in Providence with the muzzleloaders. I shot four times and got a small doe and a spike horn. Tom got a real big doe also. Jake(Tom's son) was with him and worked the bleat call between shots and was instrumental in getting the big doe to stay awhile. He thinks he got it on the second shot! I had a good time up at our cabin for three days as I had Friday off and stayed in there. Nice and quiet.
Previously to this John got a spike horn up the road with the gang of nieghbors and friends who do drives mostly. Tom got a doe on a doe permit opening day down south.
I had my usual three weeks off and spent time in Letchworth (enjoying the Rebisz hospitality) and up at the Speculator camp. In Speculator I shot one coyote while on watch and wounded another as it chased a huge doe right by me the next day in the same area. Probably three feet or less, I could feel the wind from the deer as it went by. I was hoping that it was a buck doing the chasing but it was a coyote. I saw few deer and I think the coyotes were harassing them alot as I saw as many deer track as coyote track with little room between them. I saw a fisher and a pine marten while deer hunting. I saw two other fishers in my traps as I caught two of them, one in Broadalbin and one and Speculator. I shot eighteen geese and a dozen or so ducks. I wish it didn't have to end.
Joe that story about the ten point across the river is the best!! I think all of us should go swimming while hunting once in a while. Reminds me of a time I dove into the swamp to retrieve Johnny's loaded double barrel shotgun. Looks like that was quite a good buck too. Merry Christmas and happy new year to all.

Finally!!! Season was SLOW up until this past weekend. On Saturday I went down to the river bottom in Letchworth with Stryker. Shot a nice 10 point that ran across the river and bedded on an island. I finished him off there at about 100 yards. So now I have a deer laying on an island in the middle of the raging river. What to do...Swim I guess. 20 degrees and I am stripping down and swimming across the river (ice cold....see picture of me in long johns). Did get the deer though (about 110"). Largest bodied deer I have ever shot (had to be over 200 pounds dressed). Floated across the river well though, despite the weight (haha).

Sunday I finished off someone elses wounded 8pt in my backyard on my way to my stand in the afternoon (deer was shot in the rear...wound looked about a day old, but already had a good slime and smell to it). Got in my stand at 3:30 and by 4:30 I had shot two big does and seen 12. Dragged both deer out together (check out Jocelyn's photo of my drag marks). One doe was huge (check out how much bigger she is than the 8pt.). Anyway, what an unbelievable weekend. That's the way things go when we finally get snow. Hopefully you all did as well. Check out our winter snow plow tractor (should be fun!)

Well I missed the biggest buck of my life ten minutes into opening morning due to a gun misfire. Very angry am I. After the pin failed to set off the primer, I pumped another bullet in and fired quickly. Thought I made a great shot, but after searching for three hours (wasting most of opening day), I had to conceed that I must not have hit him too hard (found white hair and several good spots of blood, then nothing). Body searched for most of the time, sure he was dead somewhere nearby. Anyway I saw four bucks that morning, including one other buck that would have gone 120-130". Yesterday I saw a decent 2.5 or 3.5 year old out back (I also saw him Saturday afternoon). So as of now, he is the buck I am aiming for. Here are the latest deer totals. Good luck and shoot straighter than me! Maybe I'll go fishing this week sometime (they should be in like crazy!)

Well Guys...after a REALLY, REALLY slow start to the season, and then a caveman-like blood trailing/deer beating incident, things have really begun to look up for me. On Friday morning I saw a big doe as I got out of my stand (at 7:15, to go to work) in my backyard. On Friday afternoon I saw 17 different deer out of a stand in my backyard (could have shot a couple of fawns, didn't see one buck, though). Saturday morning I shot a doe fawn in Letchworth (on Jocelyn's orders). Sunday afternoon I sat in Letchworth and saw 10 different deer, including three small bucks. Monday morning I shot an 8 pointer. The buck was not as big as I would like to take, but it was the last day of the season (that I was going to be able to hunt) and it was an awesome hunt. I laid a doe urine trail in to my stand this morning (Tinks#69). At about 6:45 doesn't this buck come struting in, grunting, nose to the ground following my doe-in-heat trail (I couldn't see him until he stepped out of a thicket at 15 yards). He followed my trail right to where I had sprayed the lure onto a tree. He smelled the tree for a second and then continued on my trail, heading straight for my tree stand (where I had walked). I shot him and spined him at about 8 yards. I had to finish him off with another arrow. Check out the picture with the arrows sticking out of him. I left him and went back to get my family to help gut/drag (returned in about two hours and found him like that). I have never seen bubbles coming out of a deer like that (pretty crazy). Nice example of a lung shot. Brilyn was really excited to help (not scared of deer anymore...after three this week). Anyway he weighed 115, so I think he might be a two year old with bad genetics (probably a spike last year). I'll check his teeth for confirmation though and let you know. Anyway, it was a great Veteran's Day weekend. Oh yeah, I almost forgot, I saw a completely albino squirrel yesterday!!! Has anyone else ever seen one? I got out a field tip and was going to shoot him if I got the chance (which I didn't of course). Would definitely have had him stuffed though. Really cool! Can't wait for Saturday and Shotgun. Since Joe refuses to include me in the list of people who may shoot a deer- I thought I would post again just in spite.

Not really. Actually, I got an email that included some of the coolest deer pics I have ever seen. The story in the email says that some guy out in Wisconsin found this fawn by the side of the road. He didn't keep it, he had it placed in a facility for deer. The deer will live it's life in captivity since it's coloring would not really be conducive to life in the wild.

Finally got that primate off my back for the year. Shot a big doe on Sunday. It was by far the most amazing deer story ever told! Way too good to tell on teh blog (call me for specifics). I've told it about 25 times now and it gets better every time (haha). Really though I am extremely happy getting a deer to start filling up the freezer. I've been seeing a lot more deer lately. I saw 7 behind the house the night I shot mine (including what I believe to be a real nice buck). Looking forward to this weekend and my extra day off. Should be able to get a buck into the freezer.

My hunting has been fairly slow, but I have some news to report. I saw three different eight pointers yesterday (none of them more than a yearling). I did chuck an arrow at one though, because he had such unique antlers (shot over him at 4 yards). I wasn't really sure if I wanted to shoot him, so I really didn't take my time. Anyway, Nate shot a doe a couple weeks ago and brought it down for me to cut up (see picture). Chris L. shot a real nice buck about 150 yards from my property on Sunday as I was getting ready for church. It scores 129 after deductions (book!) Great work Chris (see picture of Brilyn between antlers)!!! Shaun will be up for the next week at Letchworth and I am going to hunt hard this weekend, so you should be hearing some good news (hopefully). Let me know how you guys are doing.

Joey forgot about me in the running tally of deer taken this year. It's true, I have never shot a deer, but I killed me one mean paper plate this year while sighting in my muzzleloader.

Here's the story-

One fine fall day, I went out to our lovely back yard to make sure that my gun still shoots straight and that I still shoot straight. I enjoyed the simple pleasure of loading my muzzleloader as my 5 month-old cooed contentedly from nearby. My dear husband took the doomed paper plate out 25 yards and taped it to a refrigerator box to serve as a target.

When he came back, he suggested that I aim for the square of black tape in the middle of the plate.

I sat down at the picnic table and took my time getting comfortable. I carefully placed the crosshairs on the square of black tape, let out a half breath, and slowly squeezed the trigger.

I looked through the scope again to check my shot, and I must say I was happy with what I saw.

Joe was too, and he decided to move the box back to 100 yards, to make sure the gun was accurate at that distance as well. He had planned to make this final shot to put the plate out of its misery. However, since I had started this hunt, I was determined to finish it.

I took the gun from his hands and got ready to shoot one more time.

Once again, I carefully situated myself at the table. I lined up the crosshairs with patience and a steady hand. I let out my ritual half breath and slowly, oh so slowly, squeezed the trigger until the gun exploded with a shot.

I tried to evaluate my shot through the scope once again, but couldn't see the tape clearly enough to tell if I had hit it. It was a long shot and a wary prey, so I was worried as Joe and I walked the long path back to the box.

And then, the moment of truth! I had made a good shot on the plate and now the trophy was mine.

I carried my trophy plate back to where my loving children waited and showed them the killing shot. I have included a picture of Cade and me sharing this special moment.

After that, I asked Joe if he might like to shoot my awesome gun and see if he could bag a paper plate too. He declined, saying that one paper plate was sufficient for one day. I have included a close up shot of the paper plate- this picture is graphic and should be avoided by the squeamish.

After this amazing hunt, I am looking forward to the 2007 deer season. I hope to shoot a monster from my choice stand in the hay mow of my barn complete with hot cocoa and a space heater.

Sorry i havnt been on in a while. I have wanted to, but i forgot the address. Shot my first deer/buck with a bow sunday morning. Came in grunting with his nose to the ground. I shot him at 6 yards while sitting on the ground!

Very unique rack as well. A 2.5 year old deer that weighed close to 180. Very nice deer to take for a first!

Hunting has been REALLY slow for me after last weekends fiascos. Anyway, here's a day by day.
Friday - Hunted behind the house in the evening. Saw one big deer go through early at about 50 yards and had a six point walk directly under my stand at dark.
Saturday - Hunted behind the house in the morning. Jumped a mess of deer going in. Saw one big deer moving through at 8:00. Saw a nice big opossum.
Saturday night - Found a great spot to hunt behind the house (huge rubs), but the wind was blowing about 40mph.
Sunday Morning - Great morning to hunt (I could see my breath), but no deer!
Monday Night - 83 degrees!!! Hunted my Orchard stand in Letchworth. Had bucks all around me fighting, grunting, tearing up trees, but only saw one small 8 pointer.
Tuesday Morning - Went duck hunting with Steiner and Baker. Lots of shooting and 4 ducks killed in the pouring rain.
Tuesday Evening - Rain! Went to the Power line stand at the end of Degoyler road in the park. Saw 5 huge toms, but no deer.
Well that's it. Overall very slow so far, but the weather has finally broken and I think the time is coming. Here's the update on deer taking at this point.

Another questionable night. Got home from work around 5:50 and decided to run out back (100 yards) and sit in a treestand Stryker and I built this summer. Anyway, 45 minuts later here comes this huge doe walking through the tall grass in the field at about 30 yards. I shoot and I can hear my arrow hit the grass and deflect way off course (in fact I couldn't even find the arrow. ) Well up comes another doe (in the grass) at about 20 yards (I had gotten out of my tresstand by now to look for my arrow). I shoot and watch my arrow hit grass and go flying WAY off course (again I can't even find it). Larry you will remember this happened to me last year at Gardue that day when I slapped the deer in the side with the arrow. I though that was a fluke, but I guess I was wrong. I shoot Spitfire expandables and it seems when they hit any kind of grass, weeds, etc they shoot way of course. The reason being of course that they don't have exposed blades until they hit the deer. Otherwise they would just cut through a piece of grass or two like fixed blades always did. Any comments...I am really frusterated right now. I the positive side I did see two really nice bucks in the wheat field at about 5:45 last night (shooters). Well deer season is underway. Adam started us off by shooting a doe Saturday morning on the lease. I saw a good 6-pointer on my property Saturday morning. My dad saw a nice 8 pointer Saturday evening behind my house. Yesterday I hunted the evening stretch and shot a young doe just before dark. I saw two more big does while I sat in my stand before dark. When I recovered my arrow at dark (sticking in the ground...complete pass through shot) it was covered with guts, so I figured I had hit back a little far and decided to wait until morning to go get her. I got out at about 6:45 (still dark) this morning and when I got to my treestand I could smell her. I just followed my nose to her and as I approached chased off 5 or 6 coyotes. AS you can imagine there was absolutely nothing left. The coyotes had completely cleaned off the hind quarters and the back loins. They even ate out the tenderloins. Anyway I learned a good lesson...go after the deer immediately...we have way too many coyotes around here. I can't wait to start shooting them after deer season. Worst part of the story is that the deer had only gone about 45 yards. I probably could have gotten her last night (suck)! Anyway I'll push on. Heading out tonight to a new stand location in the back. Let you know what I see. Here's a picture of a duck hunt from last year. I can;t wait until it opens on the 23rd.

Michigan's deer season opened on 10/1 and I shot this buck opening day at 8:00 A.M

I have about 30 trail cam pics of this buck in velvet and about 10 days before I shot him. It was an awesome hunt and my dad was out with me which made it even better. Then the next day I went out for the evening hunt (about 3 miles from where I shot this buck) and just before dark another nice 8 walked in and I shot him at 15 yards, after I get the pics downloaded I will post them too. So I have had a very lucky season so far, I can hardly believe it. Good luck to all! hope to see some really good pics soon!

The highlight (above) of my season last year. I apologize in advance if you are sick of hearing about it. Carol and I went to the NYS Big Buck Club dinner banquet Saturday. I was very pleased to find out that my buck was the eighth largest "Gun -Typical" in the State for 2006! It also is the third biggest taken in Saratoga county of all time since the NYSBBC started keeping records in 1972. It brought a tear to my eye. It will likely be very hard(near impossible) for me to top. I will likely hunt just as hard though and am looking forward to the upcoming seasons. Hey you never know and I am a deer magnet...
