Hi guys. I went hunting tonight at Silver Lake Park again. I saw four does that were too far away to shoot. It was beautiful weather (55 degrees and clear). Last night was my exciting night though. I saw nothing until 6:45, when five does came through. Needless to say it was really getting dark by this time. I shot at the second doe (biggest doe) when it entered my shooting lane at 6 yards. Of course I shot under her. So here I am fooling around trying to another arrow as the deer are running all around, coughing, etc. Anyway, I finally get an arrow in and doesn't the same doe get to within 20 yards of me. By this time it is so dark you can't really even see branches, much less twigs, but I was so angry at missing her that I decided to take the shot anyway. Well I drew my bow and tried to aim. Sadly it was too dark to see through my peep, and I couldn't see my pins. So I decided to shoot instincually (whichI had never done before of course). I shot and the doe ran away. I got down to gather up my arrows and couldn't find my second arrow. I finally found it (by now it was completly dark and my flashlight was running out of batteries) and wasn't it covered in blood. So I started following the blood trail (sparse). After going about 30 yards I decided to leave it until the morning. By loooking at and smelling my arrow, I was pretty sure she was gut shot. So as I am walking out of the woods, without a flashlight, don't I almost trip over her. She was lung shot and liver shot and only went about 45 yards. The arrow exited through her guts which was why it was covered in stomach contents. Anyway, I went home and got Jocelyn and we went out with serious flashlights (Jocelyn has an extremely dangerous Mag-lite I got her for Christmas a couple years back) and got the doe. It was a beautiful, clear, cool night and we had a great adventure finding, gutting, dragging, skinning, and butchering the deer (all before bed). Tonight when I got home from hunting we ate the tenderloin (unbelievable). Anyway, It was a great opening weekend. Catch you soon.
